Aha, take an ice-cream to the forest!?

ince Saturday, 4 February 2012 you will be able to enjoy a new educational family-oriented exhibition titled "Aha, take an ice-cream to the forest" at the Tallinn branch of Science Centre AHHAA where you will have the opportunity to wander around in the model forest built by the Estonian State Forest Management Centre (RMK) and discover the secrets of old ice-cream machines.

In the forest built under the Freedom Square in the middle of the chilly winter you will not only be able to hear birds singing but also become the master of the forest and decide whether to manage or avoid managing the forest. No matter what you decide, you will see that both money-craved human actions as well as taking no action at all will have an impact on the forest.

By moving around in the forest exhibition set up in the shape of a footprint you can try to find an answer to the question of what your footprint in the forest might look like. How can you impact the people around you, the development of the economy, the delicate balance of the state and the nature by managing the forest or by deciding not to manage the forest?

While at the first glance, you might ask what the connection between the forest and ice-cream might be, then we can tell you that ice-cream sticks are also the product of forest management. Did you know that ice-cream sticks are mostly made of birch and beech?

The other half of the exhibition takes you to the ice-cream factory of Evald Rooma, the Estonian Father of Ice-Cream, also known as Uncle Eskimo. This part of the exhibition displays the unique historic ice-cream machines Mr Rooma used for making the first batches of ice-cream in Estonia more than 70 years ago.
The exhibition also features the best pieces of work from the recycled ice-cream stick design competition organized by AHHAA and the ice-cream factory of AS Balbiino in 2011. The crafty ideas range from clocks to bird-feeders. In addition, every guest will have the chance to participate in a workshop to build their own fantasy items using ice-cream sticks.

Should you feel hungry after visiting the exhibition, we have built a special picnic area by the side of the forest where you can enjoy the food taken along in your own picnic basket or celebrate your birthday with your friends.

The exhibition is sponsored by RMK and AS Balbiino.
